You could see a lot of very minute details and some of the mechanics of the systems.” There were prototypes of life-support systems for water purification, as well as an oxygenator, kind of an air scrubber, which is needed because the Martian atmosphere is very low on oxygen. They’re very preliminary engineering prototypes. “They had some development test versions of various elements of the Mars habitat, the Mars rover, and a Mars ascent vehicle capsule. They had a miniature Mars landscape set up in one of the parking lots where they test robotic rovers, unmanned rovers.” Max also visited the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where NASA is developing a mission to Mars. Just from the point of view of the look of things and the hardware that they used. “They gave us a tour of all the test facilities and research labs, which was very helpful. “I was in California and very close to JPL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech, where they do all of the unmanned probes to Mars,” says Max.
